16 Feb The romance behind the vaccine
In this context of barrier gestures, it is not easy to show affection to the one you love. However, love can intrude into the most unsuspected places.
Dr. Ugur Sahin and Dr. Ozlem Tureci have succeeded in flourishing in their shared passion for scientific research. They are crucial actors in the struggle with worldwide pandemic. With an exceptional intelligence, they are actively engaged in the exploration of cancer treatments and, more currently, cures against the coronavirus.
Married for almost twenty years, they met at the Saarland University in Homburg, Germany. They have always been partners in love but also in vaccine research laboratories considering they are respectively founder and medical director of the German pharmaceutical company BioNTech, with more than 1500 employees and known for its famous partnership with its American counterpart Pfizer.
It was by instinct that BioNTech decided to bet on this collaboration to develop a covid-19 vaccine. Although this pharmaceutical company was initially ignored in the eyes of the general public, Dr. Sahin and Dr. Tureci were propelled to the rank of mythical duo.
Dr. Sahin and his wife, originally from Turkey, form today one of the richest and most powerful couples in Germany. This is a notable story as, in addition to their scientific success, they represent a national pride for Germany because of the cultural diversity they highlight. A story that shows us that a fusional relationship can easily find its place in professional life.
